As she prepares to take on the mantle of managing her father Pataudi’s property, Sudipta Basu feels that Saba Ali Khan was born for the job
Every one knows that she exists, but given the celebrity that her siblings Saif and Soha Ali Khan enjoy, thanks to their Bollywood successes; Saba Ali Khan has never really been heard (given that Bollywood is teeming with star siblings ever ready to volunteer sound bytes on everything from hair pins to cat fights). Tiger Pataudi and Sharmila Tagore’s quiet 32-year-old second born, a jewellery designer with a line simply titled Saba, is poised to get very busy soon. Her father Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi, currently the mutawalli or chief trustee of the Nawab’s 250-crore ancestral property, reportedly is preparing to pass on the torch to Saba.
“I am reading up a lot on history and all that is involved for taking up office. It is something that will come to me eventually, but for now my father is the mutawalli,” says Saba, stating that she is not willing to give away more, but adding in the same breath, “I have taken some interest lately and am getting groomed for this.” That much, until everything is formalised. It is believed that Pataudi has been considering Saba for the role for a while now, over his other children, knowing fully well that their candidature would not be accepted by the clerics given their association with films.
A Chat with Saba reveals that she was born for the role. She characterises her childhood as an even blend of the old and new, and she feels it is she and her generation that really upholds the change into the future. “I distinctly remember when we made a transition from our black and white television to colour, and when we acquired our first computer. Today black and white TV is considered ancient; but we experienced the best of both worlds,” says Saba. The family moved to Delhi when she was growing up; it was a time when Saif was already well ensconced at Winchester College and Soha was a mere child. The girls, at the behest of their grandmother, learnt the Quaran, and as Saba says, “my sister and I really imbibed from the texts, although Saif also got a fair dose of it too. I was around more and so I connected with small things, such as the correct manner of behaviour, tehzeeb and lihaaz, the value of the ghunghat in the presence of the in-laws. My mother never needed to follow the latter, but I learnt to appreciate the value of tradition. I felt that it suited me; just as when I was growing up the salwar kameez became a part of me,” she continues. “I guess I am just an old soul.” That, coming from the daughter of parents who were trendsetters in their own time… Says Saba, “My parents were very contemporary even in the ’70s. I am much more conventional. I was the quieter one of the three siblings,” she says and quickly adds that each one was encouraged to follow their individual pursuits. Her father is a man of few words, and she says she takes after him, while her mother is artistic. Saif and Soha, she says, are strong willed. “I am a little more flexible and adapting,” she laughs. She is close to her sister, although she makes it a point to watch all of Saif’s films.
While in her ancestral home, she would often find herself tinkering with the family heirloom and participating in its upkeep with her mother. Traditional costumes must be wrapped in mul muls, put away in trunks that are placed on bricks, a safe distance from the walls to avoid contact with moisture; old wooden cupboards are to be routinely checked for termites… being a traditionalist is no cake walk, she will have you understand. “The karigari of my mom’s sarees from the ’70s is a rarity today,” she says.
Surrounded by such beauty and karigari of yore, it was no surprise that jewellery design was to become her natural calling. She launched, Saba, an eclectic line in precious and semi-precious stones, which she retails from her home in Vasant Vihar, Delhi. I hope to have an outlet and that my brand goes international,” says Saba. “I would love my jewellery to be valued but they are designed for today’s generation, that is living for now, and not really concerned about building an heirloom,” she says.
Unwittingly, Saba has been walking along the fine line between the past and present for a while now.

Krishan debuts as pianist in father Vikram Bhatt’s Haunted, a 3- D flick produced and directed by her father
Vikram Bhatt With His Daughter Krishna
While shooting for the horror thriller, the director realised that he needed a pianist. His daughter, who was on the sets assisting him, was the perfect fit.
Explains Vikram, “ There’s a scene in the movie where the lead actress ( Tia Bajpai) is attending a piano class. I needed a pianist and that’s when my daughter came to mind.” Krishna is a Class XI student at the Ryan Global School. The 16- year- old is obviously very excited to be directed by her father in her debut film.
Prefers acting A sixth- grade pianist, Krishna has been learning the instrument for eight years now. The youngster harbours acting aspirations. “ When she began assisting me during 1920, she told me she was interested in direction. But she was fooling me, I know she prefers acting first.” For the past three years, Vikram has been spotted with his daughter ( from his ex- wife Aditi) at various B- Town events. In fact, all his story ideas and scripts are narrated to his daughter. Bhatt feels he get instant reactions through her expressions and accordingly works on the script.
Vikram was 14 when he started with Mukul Anand’s Kanoon Kya Karega in 1984. Krishna seems to be following suit at 16.

Mahakshay Chakraborty, son of legendary actor Mithun Chakraborty, will be seen performing some deadly stunts in Vikram Bhatt’s upcoming film “HAUNTED”- India’s first stereoscopic 3D film.
Mithun Chakraborty’s Son Mahakshay Chakraborty
Audiences will be pleasantly surprised to see Mahakshay looking refreshingly different in Haunted and performing some daredevil stunts himself.
Action director Abbas Ali Moghul and everyone in the unit were very apprehensive about him performing the stunts. However, Mahakshay not only refused to use a body double but also relentlessly pushed himself for few of the action scenes.
Says Abbas, “Mahakshay has performed some deadly stunts himself in the movie. I remember a particular sequence where a chandelier falls on Mimoh and on the timing he had to roll on the ground before the chandelier bursts beside him. We were a little worried but Mimoh decided to do it all by himself. Though everyone on the sets suggested we use a body double but Mahakshay was very excited on doing it himself.”
Says Mahakshay, “I have had an absolutely fantastic time shooting for this particular action sequence. Though I got few swellings, the entire chandelier shot, the entire effect came out beautifully.”
Earlier Mahakshay also followed a rigorous fitness regime to shed the extra kilos and look leaner for the movie. From reviving his personality to performing the deadly stunts……looks like there’s no stopping Mahakshay!

Balancing motherhood with a career is a tricky one and Nandita Das has made a choice by opting out of old friend Deepa Mehta’s adaptation of Midnight’s Children by Salman Rushdie.
Though signed on to play a pivotal role, Nandita opted out. She says, “With little Vihaan, who is 6 months old now and so delightful, I did not think I would have been able to do justice to both the roles and would have felt quite torn. Pity, but as Deepa says, there is Kamagathamaru, where I am playing the female lead and as I say, there is a time for everything!”For Midnight’s Children Mehta offered Das a guest appearance as well. Says Das, “Even that didn’t make sense as it would have been neither here nor there. I made the decision.”

Hrithik reacts to the inclusion of his wax figure into Madame Tussauds, London
On meeting his double for the first time he said, “ I can’t believe I’m in Madame Tussauds unveiling a wax figure of myself. It’s incredible just how detailed the figure is. I’m truly honoured to be included and hope my fans will like seeing the figure”. His waxwork is in his Dhoom character — in a short- sleeved shirt left open to reveal his taut body.
Hrithik attended two sittings in Mumbai and London where sculptors captured a catalogue of reference photographs and hundreds of precise measurements.
He also donated the red shirt and dark blue jeans his figure is wearing.
The figure took four months to make at a cost of £ 150,000. He joins fellow Indian stars Amitabh Bachan, Aishwarya Rai, Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan in Madame Tussauds’ special Bollywood area.
Now that his separation from his current wife Nandita is imminent, Om Puri has drafted a farewell letter to his son Ishaan to placate his fears and insecuritiesOm Puri will be moving on in life this year. His dream home is being built with his first wife, Seema Kapoor, in her hometown, Jhalawar in Rajasthan. At 61, Om is all set to start life again from scratch.
The most sensitive area that needs to be tackled in his separation with his current wife Nandita is his son 11-year-old Ishaan. It was the fear of hurting his son at such a crucial time that has kept Om from making the break so far. But now, says Om, the time has come for him to think of his personal happiness…with Ishaan’s approval.
Om has been gradually preparing the child for his separation. But the reasons for the separation and Om’s need to start afresh with a woman who is not Ishaan’s mother are things too difficult for the child to understand. Om has therefore written a long heartfelt letter to his son which Ishaan will open at the right time.
Says Om, “I thought this was the best way to let Ishaan know that his father is not a bad person. That he is not a deserter. I have to explain to my son why I need to live away from him. I’ve put it all down in a letter that Ishaan will open after I leave.
I know he will not think unkindly of me once he reads what I have to say. I want him to know that although I’ll be staying away from him and his mother I have the highest regard for her. That by leaving I don’t mean to disrespect either my son’s or his mother’s feelings.”
This poignant but pragmatic letter has been written, signed, sealed and now waiting to be delivered to the boy as soon as the time is right.
Meanwhile, Om is playing the perfect father. “I’m doing my best. In November I took Ishaan and his mother for a holiday on London, a city that my boy loves. I stayed in the hotel while Ishaan and his mom shopped and went sightseeing to their heart’s content with a dear friend of mine.
Right now I’m shooting in a far-flung place near Khajuraho. There are no luxury hotels here. Ishaan said, ‘Baba, I want to come and be with you.’ I warned him he wouldn’t have all the comforts and luxuries that he’s used to. But Ishaan and I had so much fun.”
Says Om, “I want Ishaan to know his Baba hasn’t left him. I will be there for him anytime. I will take him on vacations. I’ll be there for all the important events in his life. I don’t want my son to think I’ve deserted him .I’ll always be there for him and Nandita.”
The other life with his first wife Seema Kapoor in Jhalawar now awaits Om.
Says Om, “I’m looking forward to my new life. I’ve stopped drinking completely. Now I want to give up smoking also. I want to live for Ishaan and Nandita, and for Seema.”

In his spare time
The actor will be shooting with Priyadarshan for Thank You, but in his spare time will keep his son company. Says Anna, “ He has his winter holidays so I decided to take him along. It’s time for some father and son bonding. Ahaan loves water sports so we want to spend a lot of time snorkelling, jet skiing, deep- water diving etc.” Ahaan turns 15 on January 15 so this is kind of a pre- birthday treat for him. The proud father reveals that his son is already taller than him, “ I enjoy being with him. I am used to taking care of him from the time he was three years old, when I’d taken him abroad for one of my films with Priyan.
I love being a hands- on dad.
Now the difference is that he takes care of me.” Let’s play! Baap- beta also plan to play a bit of cricket with the unit. “ Bobby ( Deol) and Irrfan ( Khan) are cricket- crazy, so in the six days, there will be lots of sporty action taking place. Ahaan and I also love cricket, so we will get to play a lot of it.” Shetty Junior wants to be an actor and his parents are supportive of the decision, “ I always tell him about Hrithik — who is also one of my most favorite star kids — and to be as dedicated as him. But I want Ahaan to get a degree in acting and filmmaking from the US. It’s not only about acting. If his first film doesn’t do well, it shouldn’t be the end of the world for him. I would never discourage him from wanting to be an actor. The film industry is a beautiful place to be in.

Poonam Dhillon’s son, Anmol recently met his idol Hrithik Roshan. He aspires to be a dancing sensation and an actor.
Hrithik Roshan with Anmol Dhillon, Poonam Dhillon’s SonSays a source, “Poonam doesn’t take her son to too many filmi events but last week when Anmol heard Hrithik was coming to one, he accompanied his mother to this event.
When Hrithik entered, he spoke to the mother-son duo warmly and even later posed for pictures with the boy.”
The source adds, “What was cute was that Anmol brought his own camera along and asked his mother to take pictures while he posed. Hrithik took time out for Anmol and clicked pictures with him.”
Poonam confirms, “This is the first time that Anmol met Hrithik. That’s why I took him along. He loves Ranbir Kapoor and Shahid Kapur too.
My son wants to be an actor and seems to be showing a passion for films. I have told him to complete his studies.
He’s currently studying business and marketing in the USA and wants to do an acting course in the UK next year.
His dad (film producer Ashok Thakeria) and I have told him we will support him as Anmol is a great dancer and is talented.”
The only thing I am scared of, is failure. My children can handle success but I don’t want them to see failure. When you are educated you are prepared for anything,” concludes Shetty.
